The Counselor Experience
What's it like being a staff member at Falling Creek Camp?
Camp is a supportive & friendly environment where you have the chance to make a lasting positive impact in the lives of young men. You will have opportunities to develop leadership and teaching skills while making life-long friends as you spend the summer in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. (Watch the video above!)
The Job: What we expect from you.
Time Commitment: We are looking for talented summer camp counselors who are available from late-May through mid-August. Our preference is to hire staff for the entire summer season.
“You're learning time management. You're learning how to market your activity. You're learning how to lead a group of people, from your peers to a 7-year-old camper.” Jim "Goody" Goodrum
Talent Acquisition Director
Eligibility: Counselors must have completed one year of college and be at least 19 years old.
Character: Our staff must possess the highest moral character and serve as a positive role model, while living with and supervising our campers.
Your Role: Male camp counselors live in a cabin with one other counselor and eight campers. They teach or assist in one or more activities and have other free-time and night-time duties. Female camp counselors teach or assist in one or more activities and have other free-time and night-time duties. Patience and flexibility are probably the two qualities that are most important when working as a counselor.
Energy: Going 110% every day is important. These campers are inspired by your energy, so counselors must have a high energy level, every day, going all out. If you're having fun, the campers are having fun.
Long Hours: Working at Falling Creek is a 24/7 job. You have to be able to handle anything at 3AM as you would at 3PM. The day never ends, but you can't really beat the type of day that you have.
The Benefits: What you can expect from us.
Competitive Salary: We offer a competitive and progressive pay schedule that is determined based on your experience, age, education, certifications, and other factors.
3 Square's and a Roof: Room and Board is included. As a counselor, you'll eat family-style for breakfast, lunch and dinner with your campers. We provide mattresses, sheets and blankets. Other staff perks are weekly laundry service, a dedicated counselor "Lair" with wireless internet access, weekly food nights, movie nights, and the occasional hair cut.
Generous Time Off: Each week you'll receive scheduled time-off periods totaling 29.5 hours (one 24-hour period, and one 5 & 1/2-hour period). Everyone gets the exact same amount of time, but the schedule is based on your position and role at camp. Being well-rested and refreshed is a must, so we require you to leave camp for part of your time off! (On session changeover weeks, this schedule is altered a bit.)
Professional Development: During Staff Development Week, we teach you everything you need to know about working at camp. After that, we provide materials, workshops, guest speakers and other opportunities to increase your knowledge and skills. We also make available a 24/7 online staff resource site.
Certification Courses: Different roles at camp require different certications. If we require you to have a certain course, we'll coordinate with you to get it. This may include CPR, Lifeguarding, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Swift Water Rescue, etc.
Staff Resources: We are very fortunate to have professionals of the industry working at Falling Creek. Some of our senior staff are professional kayakers, professional climbers, professional mountain bikers, etc. They are the best of the best, and you have the opportunity to learn from them.
Networking: Being a Falling Creek alumni connects you to a network of former staff and parents who are business owners and employers. We are frequently asked to refer our most talented staff to these employers after college.
Pro-Deals: During the summer you'll have access to a network of deals only available to industry professionals. These range from clothing, gear, musical instruments, etc. at varying discounts.
