Big Time In Bluffton and Charleston

Yates was excited to visit Weston & Rose Newton’s home in Bluffton, SC on Wednesday, September 29.

Weston is a Falling Creek alumnus and was joined by Lawson Lowrey, also a prior camper at FCC. Both the Newton’s and Lowrey’s sons are current campers, Lawson’s son coming back for his 5th summer in 2011.

They were joined by a large group of new families all who enjoyed watching the new camp movie that was just updated and has about 50% new footage in it this season.

Thanks to the Newton family for their wonderful hospitality.

Yates traveled to Charleston, SC on Thursday, September 30, for the Falling Creek Camp Reunion and to show the Falling Creek Movies at Jill and Billy Ford’s home.

It was a beautiful evening and the boys played ball together and ate pizza in the back yard while the parents enjoyed each others company and shared stories about camp. They all had a treat with being able to watch the new movie outside as it was projected onto a screen. Cool!

There were many new families who came to learn more about Falling Creek Camp. The current FCC campers who attended helped Yates to answer their good questions.

Yates was also pleased to be able to reconnect with Gray Tiller, who was a camper at Falling Creek when Yates was a counselor.

Gray was a big paddler and they both enjoyed many trips together for several summers. Gray later became a counselor at FCC and a paddling instructor. He is especially happy that his son is now going to be able to experience Falling Creek.

The boys were thrilled to have a chance to join in on the raffle at the end of the show. Yates uses the sign-in sheet to have one of the boys pick a name to win a fun Falling Creek Camp gift. Look for this raffle at the movie show when it comes to your town.

The boys were equally excited to receive their 2011 Limited Edition Trunk Sticker that’s only available when you come to a movie show. We thank the Cowart family for hosting a wonderful camp movie show in Savannah!

KP's Cross Country Ride

Counselor Kyle Pitts, aka KP, is riding his bike across the country. He’s planning on riding from Portland, Oregon, to Savannah, Georgia. Check out his blog, Cycling Across the Nation, for updates.

KP wrote about his blog… "In this blog I will attempt to show what my life is like for the next few months… I will carry all the gear I need on the back of my bike for the entire two to three month expedition.

“This trip hasn’t been planned too much. From my experiences with cycling in the past, planning and expectations can sometimes get in the way of having a good time. I intend to experience as much as I can, and make every day count. I’m really excited about the people I will meet and the places I will go.

“I’ll try to update pretty regularly, so keep checking and hope everyone enjoys it!”

Andrew Magruder, an alumnus of FCC, brought his son to see the new movie. He said he is ready to return to camp this coming summer.

We were also excited that Chris Motes came by to say hello. Chris was the head of the the tennis program this past summer and an Iroquois cabin counselor. Chris recently graduated from Furman University and is back in his Augusta hometown preparing to take the LSAT’s and coaching tennis while studying.

Thanks to the Rice family for opening their home to the big group of Augusta families!

Grand Greenville Gathering and Atlanta Awesome Attraction

Richard Mackintosh, the famous woodworking leader at FCC, came to provide his support. Cory Hopkins, a 3-year staff member in Music and Paddling this past summer, came to offer his counselor perspective with the parents. We were excited to hear that Cory has already placed a job with BMW after a short search following his recent graduation from Furman University. Well done Cory as this is a tough job market!

Jack Cebe and Tom Coker, both prior campers and counselors, came by to say hello as well.

On Sunday, September, 26, Yates and Nathan drove south to Atlanta to meet a large group at Jayne Ann & Clay Milling’s home for the movie show. Clay, who was a camper and fellow paddling counselor with Yates, joined a large group of alumni who came to show their sons why they loved their Falling Creek Camp experience.

Dewey Tew, mountain bike counselor in 2008 and 2009, came to the show to see many of his friends from camp. You may have seen Dewey’s awesome race this past year in Atlanta where he won the Atlanta Marathon! Dewey is a member of the Georgia Tech Cross Country team.

We thank the Crawford’s, Milling’s and Brook’s for hosting the first of many camp movie shows to come this Fall!
