Falling Creek Visits Florida

Falling Creek Camp in Miami/Coral Gables, FL

Cutting up with current FCC campers in Coral Gables/Miami, FL on Sunday, Nov. 12

I traveled deep into south Florida to Coral Gables/Miami on Sunday, November 12. Betsy & Art Murphy teamed with Cathy & Rafael Lorie to host the area Falling Creek “movies” at the Murphy’s home. While it was in the upper 30’s at camp, it was a very comfortable 79 degrees here, perfect to allow the many current campers to play outside and introduce FCC to the new families who were attending.

Tim and Inge Skelly hosted the Falling Creek movies on Monday, November 13 at their home in West Palm Beach, FL. In fact, they coordinated a pizza dinner outside where the FCC movie was projected onto a screen. What an awesome way to learn about Falling Creek! Although this was similar to the Glover’s show in Jacksonville, they both planned it outside of each other discussing the idea. It has been great to keep in touch with Tim Skelly and his wonderful family over the years as Tim was an 11-year camper and counselor at Falling Creek at the same time as when I was there.

On Tuesday, November 14, Preston and Laura Farrior joined forces with Ashley Guyton to host the Tampa, FL movies at the Farrior’s home. Several current campers and staff joined many new families to see the new 2007 Falling Creek DVD. Jay Fraser, a member of the 2006 FCC Mountaineer staff, and big star in this year’s DVD, attended the show. He now lives in Tampa following graduation from the University of Florida and is working in commercial general contracting management.

I will not be traveling this coming week as we will all be enjoying the opportunity to spend family time together for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Check back soon to see where I will be in late November and early December. Come and see us when we’re in your area. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

New Catawba Cabin

Construction of the new Catawba Cabin

New Cabin Construction

As a result of the new Counselor-In-Training program that we are offering during Main Camp, a new cabin is being built in the Catawba Tribe! This double cabin will house Catawba’s as the Black Elk & Washakie Cabin will become the CIT cabin during Main Camp. Jerry, Patrick, Simon, George & Ben already have the roof on and will begin working on the inside this week.

Jacksonville, FL

Cindy and John Glover hosted the Falling Creek Camp movies in Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at the beautiful Epping Forest Yacht Club. Patrick and Christian were a big help in the process. The families that joined us were treated to a pizza supper outside under the large live oaks as the sun was setting on the Johns River.

We then had a very unique opportunity to watch the new Falling Creek DVD on a projection screen outside. I enjoyed the chance to meet the many families who attended. I also was delighted to have the chance to meet Emi, a student at North Florida, who is interested in being on the Falling Creek staff this coming summer. A big thanks to the Glover’s for such a special “movie” show.

I’ll be heading further south in Florida this coming week. Coral Gables/Miami on Sunday, West Palm Beach on Monday and Tampa on Tuesday. If you live in these areas, please plan to come see us. It’s a great time for current campers, staff, alumni and new families interested in learning more about Falling Creek to see the new DVD and and have a chance to reunite, meet a Director and ask questions.

Charlotte & Burlington NC

Falling Creek Camp in Charlotte, NC

The O’Brien’s

On Sunday, November 5, I traveled to the O’Brien’s home in Charlotte where they hosted a large crowd of current campers, alumni and new families who were interested in learning more about Falling Creek Camp and meeting
current families who are a part of the camp community.

Spanning the ages of Falling Creek Alumni

Charlotte, NC at the
O’Brien’s home, (l to r ) Stephen Pharr, 10-year FCC camper and Rush, 7-year

Rush, a 7-year FCC camper and Junior at Charlotte Country Day School, told the families who attended about his experiences at Falling Creek. He even answered several of the questions from the parents and did a much better job than I could have. This is great practice for he plans to return to Falling Creek this summer as a Counselor-In-Training(C.I.T.).

Following Charlotte, I visited Burlington, NC on Monday, November 6 where David and Janie Sellers hosted several families at their home to watch the new Falling Creek 2007 DVD and ask me questions. It’s always fun to catch up with FCC campers during my travels and there were 4 waiting and excited
to see the new DVD.

I will be in Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, November 9 where Cindy and John
Glover will be hosting the Falling Creek movies. Come and see us!
