November Movie Showings

As the month of November draws to a close, Yates, Donnie and Chris have enjoyed traveling across the country hosting movie showings, seeing current campers and alumni, and introducing Falling Creek to many new families.

Early in November, Chris visited Lakeland, Nokomis, and Tampa, Florida. While in the area, he was able to grab a bite to eat with Ed Ulmer, the legend of Falling Creek sailing. Travis Harris joined Yates and Donnie at the movie showing in Nashville, TN and then Donnie went on to Cincinnati, where Noah Fleishmann, a Falling Creek alumni, hosted the movie showing. Chris was in Connecticut for two movie showings and Todd Robinson met him for the showing in Branford. Todd returns home to Mississippi for the holidays and then back to CT to continue working until the summer, when he returns to Falling Creek! Yates, Donnie, and Chris then met up in the greater Washington, DC area where they held movie showings in McLean, VA and Washington DC. While Donnie and Yates then did movie showings in Bethesda, MD and Fairfax Station, VA, Chris flew up to New York City where the Brumback’s hosted a movie showing. Perry Silver and Kirby Farmer, both long time Falling Creek campers and staff members, were in NYC but were unable to attend.

On the way back to Camp, Donnie and Yates reconnected with Jay Jordan’s family in Richmond, VA who hosted the movies for the first time. Jay and Yates were in a cabin together during Main Camp in 1980 and 1982. John Voigt and Virginia Fowler (2003-05) attended the Richmond movie showing. John has taken a full-time position with a recruiting firm and Virginia continues teaching German. Virginia is planning to return this summer on the horseback riding staff and John is trying to figure out how many vacation days he can accumulate to be back at camp for at least a week next summer! Connell Mullins, (1995-96) a former camper and counselor, also came by the Richmond movie showing. He and his wife are expecting their first child early in the new year. Donnie and Yates then went to Lynchburg, VA where Melodie Ailsworth, one of the Falling Creek Camp doctors, hosted a movie showing. Meanwhile, Chris attended movie showings throughout Florida in Orlando, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Delray Beach, and Miami.

In the next two weeks Yates will be in Tuscaloosa, AL; Shelby, NC; and Piedmont, SC. If you would like more information about Falling Creek Camp, or would like to know when we will be in an area near you, please contact the camp office. We are excited to report that enrollment is very strong thus far, so make sure you get your application in soon to reserve a spot in the 2006 session of your choice.

Over the first weekend in November, Steve Longenecker organized a trail work day at Gilbert’s Rock. Several area camps participated along with Donnie and Chris. The trail leading up to Gilbert’s Rock is looking better, and Falling Creek would like to thank all of those who donated their time and efforts.

Yates recently participated in the Shut-in Race on Vanderbilt’s famous trail. The trail race begins at the North Carolina Arboretum near Asheville, then twists and climbs it’s way up 3,000 feet of elevation gain to Mount Pisgah. 175 runners from around the country competed in this years 18 mile grueling trail run. October Movie Showings!

Donnie and Yates have returned from several weeks on the road to numerous cities in three different states. "It is always a treat to see the current campers and learn of their school, sports and special activity news" said Yates.

Donnie and Yates were not only introduced to many new families interested in Falling Creek, but also reconnected with several alumni. John Barganier, a former camper in the early 80’s, attended Montgomery’s movies with his son Jack (camper in ‘05) and his family. Dusty Davis, a counselor and previous Associate Director for FCC in the 80’s came to see us in Birmingham with his three children, Chase, Honey, and Cole.

David Malone, a camper in the 80’s, joined us in Birmingham and shared stories from his years at FCC. Clay Milling (camper ?78 ? ?81 and counselor 85, 86 & 89), Newton Quantz (counselor in the 80’s), and Frank Jackson (camper/CIT ‘78-’85 and counselor 86-89) supported a large group of interested families in Atlanta. Alexander Thomas, a camper from 01 – 06 and member of the FCC Honor Council, provided some inspirational words to the younger boys in Atlanta who are considering coming to Falling Creek.

Fred Sims, a camper in the early 70’s attended the Augusta movies with his son Franklin , a camper in ‘05. Cindy Ross, a nurse from this past summer, is living in the Augusta area and came by to say hello and support the Augusta crowd. Charlotte welcomed Jess Belcher and Jimmy Robinson, both campers/CIT’s in the 80’s and counselor’s in the 90’s, and Stephen Pharr, a camper/CIT ’78-86.

Introducing Falling Creek to new families and providing the venue to see camp friends and alumni could not be accomplished without the assistance from our family representatives. We want to sincerely thank all of the family representatives for their dedication and continued support of Falling Creek.

Donnie, Chris and Yates look forward to an active upcoming tour to many cities and colleges across the country in the next 6 months. They will be traveling throughout the month of November and early December and hope that you will come join them when they are in your area. Check the Camp Calendar foFor an updated list of the Falling Creek travel schedule.
